NORTHERN TRUST SIGNS PROMOTIONAL AGREEMENT FOR FORMER BRITISH SUGAR SITE

21st October 2011

Northern Trust Company Limited and Associated British Foods are pleased to announce the joint venture for the planning promotion of the former British Sugar Facility at Allscott near Telford.

The site closed in 2008 following more than 80 years of operation, and at its peak the facility processed more than 6,000 tonnes of sugar beet and generated 800 HGV deliveries each day.

The partnership hopes to regenerate over 100 acres of the former heavy industrial site and substantially enhance the quality and attractiveness of the area whilst introducing opportunities for the rural economy.

Northern Trust will hold a public consultation event in the New Year during which views will be invited from the local community and key stakeholders to identify and assess the range of options available for the regeneration of the site.

Mike Riding Land & Regeneration Director at Northern Trust said “We are delighted to have been chosen by Associated British Foods as their partner to bring forward the redevelopment of this key site.

We are committed to the regeneration of the site and the provision of a high quality development at Allscott which is appropriate to the surrounding area. Working alongside the landowner there is an opportunity to transform this extensive brownfield site to create a new sustainable community which can develop as an integrated place within the rural economy.

We are familiar with the area having completed the Cedar Court development in 2008 a development which benefited directly from working with Telford & Wrekin Council, English Partnerships and Advantage West Midlands. We are confident that we can apply this knowledge to create a vibrant and sustainable development for Allscott.”

The joint venture with Northern Trust follows the agreement to grant a new long lease to the Allscott Sports & Social Club and for the sale of the Site of Special Scientific Interest  and associated land to David Hanson. David Hanson is a local gentleman and partner in a family business specialising in river maintenance and aquatic plant control.

David Mills of Associated British Foods said “The agreement with Northern Trust is the final piece of the jigsaw which will secure the future of the 350 acre Allscott site in a manner which safeguards existing businesses and will attract future growth and investment to the area”.
