HISTORY
An 80 year mill converted to retail commercial units in the 1980’s. The building is in a poor state of repair and refurbishment is commercially unviable.
APPROACH
- Northern Trust have put forward plans for an improved scheme to enhance the retail offer, incorporating a larger grocery store and modern facilities for independent retailers is required.
- The retail development would not be viable without cross subsidy from approximately 40 new houses at the rear of the new retail scheme.
- A full community engagement has resulted in significant amendments to layout and design
STATUS
- Planning permission was granted on appeal but market pressures have required amendments to the retail element.
- A revised planning application was granted planning permission in May 2013 for 62 houses, a row of independent retail outlets, library and convenience grocery store.
- The housing element was sold to Rowland Homes.
- The retail parade was sold to A & S Holdings Ltd in April 2014 and the site is actively managed by Whittle Jones.
